Software Practical

Parallel Optimal Control of the 3D Heat Equation

Description

The aim of the project is to run an existing parallel code on IWR's cluster computer Helics II. The code solves a time-periodic PDE optimal control problem involving the heat equation in 3D. It is based on a two-grid Newton-Picard approach and is implemented on the basis of the software framework Trilinos.

The project is to be completed by a report and an oral presentation in the Simulation and Optimization group seminar.

Focus

  • Getting acquainted with a parallel computer
  • Installation of Trilinos and the optimization code
  • Assessment of parallel speed-up

The practical can serve as a preparation project for a Bachelor, Master, or Diplom thesis in the Simulation and Optimization group.

Classification of the project

This project is suited for one or two students as an advanced software practical. Exceptional students can ask for completion as a beginners' practical.

Requirements

  • Unix skills
  • Numerik 0
  • Numerik 1+2 and Parallel Computing not required, but beneficial
