"Java Programming in a Literature Database Project"

Description

JabRef is an open source bibliography reference manager. The native file format used by JabRef is BibTeX, the standard LaTeX bibliography format. JabRef runs on the Java VM (version 1.4.2 or greater), and should work equally well on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

The goal of this project is to extend functionality of JabRef to allow for new command line options. These options are needed to let JabRef export contents of the BibTex data file into HTML. This basic functionality is already available in the latest release, but should be extended to support also filtering of the data. The reference manager shall be implemented on a web server with either CGI or direct usage of Java and tailored output filters shall be made available for the work group, but also the international Open Source JabRef community.

Additional comments

I would like to couple this practical to a one- or two month HiWi job. The main purpose of this job would be to correct inconsistent data within the literature database and help work group members to use JabRef to store their publications.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Java (or will to learn it)
  • Knowledge of HTML, CGI, ...
  • Interest in working in an Open Source project

Size of the project

This project is suited for one or two students. It can be performed as an advanced practical.
